Increase community participation in social and recreational activities that improve the overall health of the community
Provide recreational facilities and programs that are safe and accessible for people of all ages and abilities
Support the establishment of sustainable food initiatives such as community gardens to promote healthy food choices and food security

What we will do to achieve this
Promote the safe use and enjoyment of public facilities and spaces
Encourage improved safety in critical areas of the city, such as entertainment precincts
Ensure that crime prevention environmental design principles are applied to urban design
Prevent and remove graffiti in the city in partnership with the community
Effectively respond to legislative changes in relation to the enforcement of local laws, regulations and licenses
Maintain high standards of amenity and safety through appropriate local laws and compliance programs, which take account of the growth and development of the city
Continue to provide world-class lifeguard services to enhance the safety and enjoyment of people using the city’s ocean beaches
Maximise disaster management response in the city by implementing and regularly testing the disaster management plan and responding to disaster events such as floods, storm surges and wildfire
Provide effective welfare programs which support the local community in the event of emergencies or disasters

What we will do to achieve this
Maximise the public health of the community by identifying, protecting and remedying health-related hazards and risks
Continue to deliver professional animal management services to maximise public safety and health
Ensure community health programs are appropriate for a socially diverse community
Contribute to the cleanliness of the city, working with other organisations
Performance area we will evaluate
Public health service delivery, including immunisation / vaccination, animal management services, city cleaning services and water quality

What we will do to achieve this
Target community capacity building activities to meet the needs of socially diverse groups and specific areas in the city
Build the skills, knowledge and ability of the city’s not-for-profit community groups to enable them to access funding and expand services
Improve safety, amenity and liveability in entertainment precincts by balancing the needs of business with those of residents and visitors
Ensure the city’s socially diverse communities can contribute to decision-making
Work in partnership with the State Government and other stakeholders to support policies dealing with key social issues such as domestic violence, homelessness and mental health

Community perception of being included and supported, through the provision of facilities and services which meet the needs of a diverse population
The community takes pride in its heritage and diversity
What we will do to achieve this
Implement a rich cultural program incorporating festivals, events and activities which reflect and engage a socially diverse community
Provide sustainable cultural facilities to encourage artistic and creative energy
Educate and promote the value of cultural heritage and the conservation of built heritage, working in partnership with the community, State and Federal Government, and the private sector
Support and foster artistic talent in the city
Recognise the heritage of the Gold Coast and Traditional Owners of the land

The community's engagement in heritage and diversity, through participation in events, requests for cultural funding and heritage listings
Adequate social infrastructure meets the diverse
What we will do to achieve this
Plan and commence delivery of social infrastructure including human services, libraries, community and youth centres and sport and recreational facilities
Plan activity centres to provide good access to social infrastructure and networks, working collaboratively with land use, transport and environmental planners
Increase the utilisation and accessibility of the city’s social infrastructure
Performance area we will evaluate
Social infrastructure which caters for the needs of the city, through the provision of appropriate facilities and infrastructure

Our targets for 2014 will include progress towards:
- increasing the physical activity levels of Gold Coast residents by 5% through the active and healthy program
- an 80% satisfaction rating by residents in relation to access to spaces for community meetings and activities
